Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has rejected the opportunity to be vice-captain of the super eagles before the position was handed to Eddy Onazi and Kenneth Omeruo.
Contrary to speculations that the midfielder would not honor future Super Eagles call ups after he was overlooked for the captain’s armband by coach Sunday Oliseh, one of Mikel’s representatives has insisted that the player has taken the decision in good faith and is available for selection for the world cup qualifiers.
“Sunday Oliseh wanted Mikel to be vice-captain, since he has already given Musa the captain’s armband”, the unnamed agent told allnigeriasoccer.com
“He only wants to play in the team, he is not interested in being an assistant captain, whenever they invite him, he will come. I think he was not chosen as a captain because he missed the game in Tanzania, but Oliseh was impressed with his performance in the friendly match against DRC and Cameroon.
Ghana will be without some of its key players like Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew for Tuesday’s friendly against Canada due to injuries and visa problems.
The black stars will also be missing Christian Atsu and Rabiu Mohammed through injury while defenders Baba Raham, Daniel Amartey as well as striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom could not get visas.
Goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, who was due to make a return to the black stars team after sixteen months, will not be available for the game.
While these eight players will be missing, their absence has also given Coach Grant the chance to name some players who have been itching for the chance to play for the black stars.
Gideon Baah, Phil ofosu, Lloyd Sam and Kwadwo Poku are among the players who will be among their debuts in the Canada game.
Kwarasey’s club sought permission from the Ghana football association to excuse him from the game because of club commitments the same week. Dede Ayew is also missing the game in Washington due to an injury.
Captain Asamoah Gyan has already been ruled out because of a hamstring injury. Some players like Baba Rahman and Daniel Amartey could not get visas for the match but it gives the coach the chance to see some players he has monitored.
The people involved in the drama going on in the super eagles camp which has become known as the show of shame of Belgium have been speaking on their actions even as they put aside their difference to confront Congo in a friendly match today in Belgium.
Sunday oliseh who described the altercation as a normal disagreement in a family, however explained his actions of stripping first choice goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama of the Eagles captain’s band and handing it over to CSKA Moscow forward Ahmed Musa.
Speaking on brilla radio, oliseh said that the storm was over but insisted that Musa, the man who takes over as captain of eagles have all the qualities of a good captain.
“I want a captain who is disciplined. A leader who can motivate other players. A player who comes to camp early. I want a young player not a retiring player as captain, and Ahmed Musa is that player. He is my captain” oliseh said
“As a coach I have looked at the team and I have looked at Nigeria going forward. We need a captain who will think of staying with Nigeria for several years to come, who is regularly in the front. And Ahmed Musa did a great job for us in Tanzania under very difficult circumstance. He is a very responsible player and he is the captain of the team.
The fact that I would like to have somebody (as captain) who is thinking of playing now and not somebody who is preparing for retirement or thinking of life after football. And I think it’s time we had peace and quiet around the super eagles.
That’s is why I am glad that most of the players here are finding ways to work as a team because I get the feeling now that they are aware that they are representing 170 million people”, Oliseh said .
He explained that the camp is in good mood ahead of today’s match. “The players have shown their desire and we are working together. It is unfortunate that the home-based players are yet to be given visas but we are hopeful that they will be here for the second match against Cameroon on Sunday “
